Computing Heavy Elements

چکیده
Reliable calculations of the structure of heavy elements are crucial to address fundamental science questions such as the origin of the elements in the universe. Applications relevant for energy production, medicine, or national security also rely on theoretical predictions of basic properties of atomic nuclei. Heavy elements are best described within the nuclear density functional theory (DFT) and its various extensions. While relatively mature, DFT has never been implemented in its full power, as it relies on a very large number (∼ 10−10) of expensive calculations (∼ day). The advent of leadership-class computers, as well as dedicated large-scale collaborative efforts such as the SciDAC 2 UNEDF project, have dramatically changed the field. This article gives an overview of the various computational challenges related to the nuclear DFT, as well as some of the recent achievements.

Study Concentrations Changes of Lead, Chromium, Nickel, Cadmium, Zinc and Copper in Beshar River of Kohgiluyeh and Boyerahmad Province, Iran
Due to the lack of water quality of resourses in country, exact review of available water resources quality, especially in terms of heavy elements (heavy metals) has a particular importance. Due to industrial towns 1 and 2 of Yasuj city and also Yasuj wastewater treatment, surveying environmental harmful effects of heavy metals on this river is very important. To investigate the changes of heav...
متن کاملSources of contamination in rainwater by major and heavy elements in Arak, Iran
Measurements of Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Ni, Hg, and Fe heavy metals and major elements and components such as Ca, HCO3, SO4, Na, K, Mg and Cl in soluble rain fractions were performed on rainwater collected at Arak plain during the rainy seasons of 2012. Concentrations of the heavy metals in the soluble fractions decreased for Fe, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, As and Hg, respectively and the major elements and compon...
متن کاملFeasibility Study of Using Adsorbent Plants to Remove Heavy Metals from Wastewater of Petrochemical Industry (Razi Case Study of Tehran)
Background & objectives: Since many plants have high efficiency in absorbing heavy elements, the use of phytoremediation is of great importance. The purpose of this study is to identify native plants that absorb heavy metals. Also, the possibility of using them in phytoremediation technology in soils contaminated with heavy metals (around the petrochemical industry of Razi fertilizer in Tehran ...
متن کاملFragmentation, NRQCD and Factorization in Heavy Quarkonium Production
We discuss factorization in heavy quarkonium production in high energy collisions using NRQCD. Infrared divergences at NNLO are not matched by conventional NRQCD matrix elements. However, we show that gauge invariance and factorization require that conventional NRQCD production matrix elements be modified to include Wilson lines or non-abelian gauge links. With this modification NRQCD factoriza...
متن کاملQuantitative and Qualitative Determination of Heavy and Toxic Elements in the Fish Grown in Treated Wastewater and Their Comparison with Other Fish
The elements Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Cr, Ni, Pb and Cd were determined in the meat and skin of fish by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The fish were grown in treated wastewater, Zayanderood river, and fisheries of Flavarjan and Babolsar. Arsenic and mercury in the samples were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy and Cold Vapor AAS, respectively. The concentration of t...
متن کاملAsymptotic algorithm for computing the sample variance of interval data
The problem of the sample variance computation for epistemic inter-val-valued data is, in general, NP-hard. Therefore, known efficient algorithms for computing variance require strong restrictions on admissible intervals like the no-subset property or heavy limitations on the number of possible intersections between intervals. A new asymptotic algorithm for computing the upper bound of the samp...
